February is Black History Month. During the twenty-eight days there are events and resources encouraging Canadians to further participate in honouring the Black Canadian experience. MQUP has published a number of titles within Black Studies and African Studies, all of which contribute important perspectives and research. We’ve selected five recent publications that approach the Black experience, both current and historical, through a Canadian lens.
A crucial study of the education of African Canadian children as it reflects their citizenship and lives in their chosen country.
“There are very few books as comprehensive as this collection that investigate the experiences of African Canadians in Canada’s education system. Several of the authors are among the best scholars on the subjects of race, antiracism, and postcolonialism. In sum, an excellent work.” Goli M. Rezai-Rashti, University of Western Ontario
A richly drawn portrait of Haiti in Quebec, of Quebec through Haiti, and the ways in which migrants transform societies.
“A Place in the Sun is an important contribution to Quebec, Canadian, and Haitian history. It brings the “other” Quebec into conversation with the dominant nationalist narrative, and in the process changes that narrative. It forces us to reconcile the past with our present, and to imagine possible futures that reflect the reality that there are many peoples who have made Quebec, and in the process made Quebec their home.” Montreal Review of Books
A survey of English and French black Canadian writing and its transnational connections from the eighteenth century to the present.
“The Black Atlantic Reconsidered offers a meticulously researched, contextualized and engaging exploration of Black Canadian writing. A must-read for any person who desires a comprehensive meditation on Black Canadian writing past and present. Winfried Siemerling’s thorough and thoughtful book helps to fill a mighty void, and will open the door to more conversations about one of Canada’s most vital, yet understudied literary communities.” Lawrence Hill, author of The Book of Negroes
A study of the black experience in Montreal.
“There has been a steady output of high-quality work in black Canadian history over the past ten years amounting to a minor renaissance; Mackey’s work, no doubt, will be one of the works at the center of this revival’s ongoing conversation.” Barrington Walker, Queen’s University
An exploration of what it means to be black and the meaning of blackness and multiculturalism.
“Blackness and Modernity is a magnum opus, wide ranging, almost scandalously ambitious, the work of a person with a generous heart and a brilliant mind, willing to toil in Clio’s Vineyard for many years. This book should reinvigorate the political quest for a genuine multiculturalism.” Canadian Journal of Sociology
