This volume critically engages the tropes of a Canadian national identity that the Group of Seven Canadian Landscape Artists and their manipulators define as "northerness" and "wilderness."
This "wildercentric" focus and interpretation of a boreal geogrphy and climate were rendered in a self-concious national art that elided urbanism, industry, and sociocultural diversity from the putative national chronicle. The present technique employs three devices: the editors' excellent scholarly essays and introductions to each of the subsequent six chapters; artisic representations and commentary by 26 artists and a rich assemblage of essays, commissioned essays, and an interview. The sum is a truly novel approach to critically exploring such "identity"politics in Canada, but with ramifications for other nationalizing-state agendas in an increasing transnational and cosmopolitan world. The intellectual richness of this study is matched by its lavish production and superb illustrations and scholarly apparatus. Summing Up: Highly Recommended. Most levels/ libraries.- B. Osbourne, Queen's University at Kingston
