The following is excerpted from The London Free Press review of John Walsh's My Heart's Best Wishes for You.
It’s unlikely many Londoners would know much about John Walsh.
In fact, it’s arguable that few Catholics have ever heard or know much about the 19th-century Bishop of London who went on to become the Archbishop of Toronto shortly after Confederation in 1869.
But if Father John Comiskey has anything to do with it, most Londoners will not only know who Archbishop John Walsh was, but also the kind of man and leader he was for the Roman Catholic church and the impact he had.
Comiskey has written a book about Walsh, My Heart’s Best Wishes For You ($59, published by McGill-Queens University Press, available at Chapters and online at Amazon.com).
“He saved this diocese,” said Comiskey, 57, an academic who still teaches history at St. Peter’s Seminary and leads the Mary Immaculate parish in east London.
“Walsh rescued this diocese and left it on a strong foundation for the future.”

He also built schools, hospitals and orphanages and played a major role in maintaining good relations with Protestants and lobbying to ensure Catholics were represented among major appointments to powerful positions, such as judgeships. He often corresponded with Canada’s first Prime Minister Sir John A. MacDonald, working behind the scenes to influence not only government, but the politics of the church.

Comiskey said he hopes there is a wide audience for the book.
“I’d like to think this is a read for anyone, especially people who enjoy biographies, but also history, people interested in Canadian history but also religious history,” Comiskey said.
