The exhibit, “Enemy Aliens”: The Internment of Jewish Refugees in Canada, 1940-1943, will be at the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre until June 2013. It will then travel to museums across Canada.
The exhibit uses Blatant Injustice: The Story of a Jewish Refugee from Nazi Germany Imprisoned in Britain and Canada during World War II by Dr. Walter W. Igersheimer as a primary source.
Curator Nina Krieger has collected artwork, personal items and video testimonials from interned Jewish refugees which bring to life their experience of imprisonment in internment "camps" in Quebec, Ontario and New Brunswick from 1940-1943. Among the never-before-displayed artefacts is a "prisoner of war" uniform with a red target on the back (to make it easy for guards to shoot escapees); a strand of barbed wire from the internment camp in Sherbrooke, Quebec; and crafts made by internees to raise money for charity.
