A Fleeting Empire by Andrew D. Nicholls examines the lives and exploits of early European adventurers in North America, before the future of North American rule was decided on the Plains of Abraham. The Chronicle Herald recently reviewed the book:
"It is this larger context that is explored by Andrew D. Nicholls in his excellent book, A Fleeting Empire: Early Stuart Britain and the Merchant Adventurers to Canada.
The North Atlantic world was the focus for complex rivalries among kingdoms, as well as adventurers hoping to make or restore their fortunes through activities like Alexander’s in Nova Scotia.
Nicholls explains how development in North America cannot be separated from what was happening in Europe. He untangles the confused early history of this region remarkably well.
The book teems with a collection of remarkable characters, such as the Kirke Brothers, who captured Quebec in 1629 on behalf of their company, the Merchant Adventurers to Canada, only to see it returned to France three years later, primarily to ensure the payment of the dowry of Charles I’s French wife, Henrietta Maria."
