Each year, hundreds of thousands of tourists visit Green Gables Heritage Place in Cavendish, Prince Edward Island, in search of what they call an “Anne experience”. Anne, of course, never lived in this house, but neither did Lucy Maud Montgomery. It belonged instead to cousins of hers, and it partly inspired the fictional Green Gables. The farmhouse has been redecorated in the style of the 1890s and altered to make it more like the homestead described in the novels. Anne of Green Gables appeared in 1908, while Montgomery was still living in Cavendish. Three years later, aged thirty-seven, she finally left the island, moving to Ontario with her new husband, Ewan Macdonald. As Lesley Clement notes in his contribution to L. M.
