Excerpted from EMC Kingston's article Revealed Kingston: author explores city's religious character and roots.
There's no doubt that a number of centuries-old stone churches play a large role in defining the architectural landscape of Kingston. But how does religious faith help to shape the social and political makeup of the Limestone City, and vice versa?
Such is the subject of professor Bill James' new book God's Plenty: Religious Diversity in Kingston.
In his 30 years of teaching religious studies at Queen's, James noticed a number of ways in which faith demographics in Kingston were evolving,
"I developed a kind of template where (my students would visit and profile) religious sites in Kingston," he says. "These were beginning to accumulate, and I noticed changes – new groups coming on stream, some discontinuing, some merging (etc.) so I thought the religious landscape of Kingston would be an interesting focus for a research project."
God's Plenty details the findings of the project. James explains that currently, as in the past, the three most prominent religious institutions in the city are the Roman Catholic Church, the United Church and the Anglican Church.
