A note from Philip Cercone, Executive Director of McGill-Queen’s University Press:
We at McGill-Queen’s University Press were saddened to learn of the death of our friend and past Board of Directors member Judith Mappin, a stalwart promoter of Canadian authors, publishers, and literature. In 1974 Judy with two other partners did something totally brave and unprecedented: they opened in Montreal the Double Hook Book Shop, a first in our country which exclusively stocked books authored by Canadian writers. For 30 years the Double Hook became Judy’s parlour, where she greeted book-lovers and hosted countless book-launches and receptions for authors.
I first met Judy in the mid-1980’s when I joined McGill-Queen’s University Press and, along with others, founded the Quebec Society for the Promotion of English Language Literature. Judy and I served on the QSPELL Board and were responsible for fundraising for the QSPELL book prizes. It was due to Judy’s hard work that the book prizes were endowed and that they continue today under the banner of the Quebec Writers’ Federation Literary Awards.
For many years, Judy sat on the Board of McGill-Queen’s University Press and her wise counsel on the state of the industry was always on target. Her contribution to publishing in Canada was recognized in 2008 when the Association of Canadian Publishers gave her the President’s Award of Distinction, McGill University conferred an honorary degree on her, and she was made a Member of the Order of Canada. Judy, along with her husband, John Mappin, and brother, Charles Taylor, were tireless promoters of Canadian authors, literary events, and associations. Montreal, Quebec, and Canada have lost a giant literary presence and we mourn her loss.
The staff and Board of Directors of McGill-Queen’s University Press extend their heartfelt sympathies to the family of Judith Mappin.
