In this richly informative, almost encyclopedic book examining the momentous events of 1968 in France, which appeared to be revolutionary, widespread, and popular, Bourg (Bucknell) provides a vast panorama of the involvement of various political factions and iconic French intellectuals. He raises a significant question: did this vast movement succeed? His textured interpretation indicates yes and no. Bourg carefully and exhaustively researched primary and secondary sources, periodicals, and newspapers to give a moving account of "The Events," as they were called. A curious popular graffiti slogan was "It is forbidden to forbid." This raises a question about the psychological nature of group feelings, which Bourg does not address: why did such an intense, frenzied mass uprising occur in a country that was certainly democratic and hardly repressive, despite de Gaulle's apparent disconnection with the French people, and college students' many legitimate grievances? A growing feminist movement brought attention to the fact that the judicial system historically minimized violence against women. The meaning of "Ethics," prominently mentioned throughout the text as a motivating reason for the "Events," and as a goal, is paradoxical, since its use was relative to a party's political disposition–Left or Right. An engrossing work, profound, thoughtful, and well written.
Summing Up: Highly recommended. All levels / libraries. – J. Szaluta, emeritus, United States Merchant Marine Academy
