The following is excerpted from the article The Covenanters in Canada tells the history of Reformed Presbyterianism in Canada
In a natural progression from his first book, The Chignecto Covenanters, published in 1997, in his newest release local author and professor emeritus in the Department of Religious Studies and Mount Allison University Eldon Hay continues to relate the interesting story of one of Canada’s earliest religious minorities.
Recently launched in Sackville, The Covenanters in Canada: Reformed Presbyterianism from 1820-2012, is an historical account of a religious community that has been almost forgotten in the annals of Canadian history.
Hay said recently that the inspiration for both books came during a visit to a small, old Presbyterian cemetery in Jolicure back in the early 1990s.
“Nobody seemed to know anything about it, so I began digging into its history…that little cemetery was actually the site of a church for a time. There was a congregation of Covenanters who were visited by a minister from Amherst, Rev. Alexander Clark. The circle began to widen from there…and the history sort of unfolded,” Hay explained.
Originating in Ireland and Scotland, the Covenanters were a group of religious dissidents who objected to having a ruler who was both head of church and state. They were steadfastly opposed to the Stuart kings’ interference in the affairs of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland, and despite opposition from other religious denominations; the Covenanters not only survived but developed a respectful relationship with other religious and non-religious denominations.
The Covenanters in Canada: Reformed Presbyterianism from 1820-2012, traces the history and theological significance of this tenacious group from their roots to the immigration of its missionaries to the New World.
