As a distinguished scientist, pacifist, and feminist, Ursula Franklin has been regularly invited by diverse groups to share her insights into the social and political impacts of science and technology.
Ursula Franklin Speaks is a wide-ranging collection of twenty-two speeches and five interviews from 1986 to 2012 that have been retrieved and restored from audio and visual recordings with the help of Franklin’s collaborator, Jane Freeman.
These speeches and interviews, available here in print for the first time, stress the increased need for discernment and principled dialogue among Canadians. Although her speeches and interviews are often critical of the status quo, Ursula Franklin Speaks is a fundamentally optimistic book, grounded in the conviction of the human capacity for compassion and understanding.
You can listen to Franklin’s 1989 Massey Lectures, The Real World of Technology, online with the beautiful, (relatively) new and interactive Massey Lectures iPad app, designed by House of Anansi Press and Critical Mass digital design agency.
The app includes nearly 200 hours of text, audio lectures, interviews, talks, and exclusive footage. And it recently won the prestigious Silver Cannes Lions award for Digital Online Design this past June – Congratulations to everyone involved! Click here for more info
If you don’t have an iPad, you can access Franklin’s lectures through the CBC Ideas Massey Lectures website.
