A catalogue of one of the most important private collections of Yiddish poetry in the world.
Joe Fishstein, a garment worker in the Bronx, New York, amassed an extraordinary collection of some 2300 Yiddish books, mostly poetry, from many different countries. A Garment Worker's Legacy is a romanized catalogue of the collection, which is housed in the rare books department of the McLennan Library at McGill University.
In addition to standard works, the collection includes many rare books, most of which have been preserved in vintage condition by beautiful hand-made jackets fashioned by Fishstein. The collection also includes albums of early twentieth-century post cards and trade union memorabilia.
The catalogue includes a preface by Ruth R. Wisse, who was instrumental in acquiring the collection for McGill, a comprehensive introduction, and extensive indices. A table of name equivalents links a name in its original Hebrew alphabet form to the Roman alphabet version used in the entries and indices. The illustrator index contains more than 400 artists, including Marc Chagall and El Lissitsky.
