MQUP author David Wilson will join the St Patrick's Society of Montreal tonight to revisit a historic Irish Canadian concern: in 1867 Father of Confederation Thomas D'Arcy McGee was expelled from the Society for his ardent criticism of the Fenian revolutionary movement.* Wilson will take up D'Arcy McGee's defense, calling for his posthumous reinstatement. Society historian J. Peter Shea will argue the other side of the debate.
Wilson's two-volume account of D'Arcy McGee's life, comprised of Thomas D'Arcy McGee: Passion, Reason, and Politics 1825-1857 and Thomas D'Arcy McGee: The Extreme Moderate, 1857-1868, is the definitive D'Arcy McGee biography:
"A magnificent achievement. The narrative has tension and momentum, even though we know the final tragic scene. This is the triumphant finale of years of scholarship and must rank as one of the great historical biographies of our time." Liam Kennedy, Queen's University, Belfast
( * This is a private event for members of the St. Patrick's Society.)
