It is pretty difficult not to notice the amount of students beginning, or returning to university across North America right now. If you haven't already, no doubt you'll see and hear more when the Frosh activities reach their peak, before stumbling back into class. While Montreal is certainly known for having a certain joie de vivre, there are alternatives to haze-based bonding that still involve alcohol.
One event we would like to draw your attention to is the upcoming Mordecai Richler Pub Crawl, scheduled for September 21, from 5:30pm to 9:00pm. If you don't already know great anecdotes about Montreal's literary bad boy, you'll be sure to find them out from Gazette columnist Bill Brownstein, the author's son (and accomplished writer) Noah Richler, while spending a little time on barstools in a couple of Mordecai's favourite haunts. Even if you haven't had the chance to read Richler's works (such as The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, St Urbain's Horseman, and Barney's Version), it's impossible not to be absorbed by tales of the author's accomplishments and exploits. This tour only has three stops, but if you want to find out more about Richler's haunts, neighbourhoods, life, and works, consider picking up a copy of Reinhold Kramer's Gabrielle Roy prize-winning biography, Mordecai Richler: Leaving St Urbain. We also hear that there may be a few free copies handed out to guests…
But better still is that all of the proceeds from the event will be donated to McGill University's new Mordecai Richler Writer-in-Residence Program, which no doubt will help to keep this city buzzing with the life of future writers. And it sure doesn't hurt to learn something new over a couple drinks. Until maybe the next day.
