Leaving Christianity: Changing Allegiances in Canada since 1945 looks at why Canadians started to walk away from organized Christianity in the 1960s and how that defection became an exodus. Drawing on a wide array of national and denominational statistics, Brian Clarke and Stuart Macdonald document the true extent of the decline, the timing of it, and the reasons for this major cultural shift.
John Longhurst wrote an extensive overview of the book for the Winnipeg Free Press, outlining how the authors “show that many churches and denominations are in serious trouble.”
In a companion piece, Longhurst shares an array of reactions towards the book from academics studying religion in Canada. He finds that “the overall response to the book was positive, including a sense of gratitude for the enormous amount of work done by the authors.”
