New Arrivals in Religious Studies

Dec 19, 2017 Uncategorized 0 Comments

As we wrap up 2017 we’re reflecting on the final releases of our Fall 2017 catalogue. However, the following list is not just some of our newest arrivals, but new arrivals in religious studies. From biography to history to philosophy, these titles reflect on prominent figures and thinkers, the female experience, or secularization.

The Life of Luigi Giussani
By Alberto Savorana, translated by Chris Bacich and Mariangela Sullivan

A detailed account of the life and legacy of the founder of the Communion and Liberation movement.

“This biography does not leave us as we were before we started reading; it probes us and is able to transform us.” Cardinal Marc Ouellet, Prefect of the Congregation for Bishops

Vatican II and Beyond: The Changing Mission and Identity of Canadian Women Religious
By Rosa Bruno-Jofré, Heidi MacDonald and Elizabeth M. Smyth

A look at the impact of Vatican II through the Canadian Religious Conference and the lived experience of Sisters Alice Trudeau and Mary Alban.

“Well-researched and well-written Vatican II and Beyond is an important contribution to a growing body of knowledge on the history of women religious, offering valuable comparative perspectives.” Margaret McGuinness, La Salle University

God and Government: Martin Luther’s Political Thought
By Jarrett Carty

A compelling account of the political thought of the man who started the Reformation.

“God and Government provides engaging and lively reflection upon Luther and his contemporary significance.”John von Heyking, University of Lethbridge and author of The Form of Politics: Aristotle and Plato on Friendship

Leaving Christianity: Changing Allegiances in Canada since 1945
By Brian Clarke and Stuart Macdonald

Why Canadians started to walk away from organized Christianity in the 1960s and how that defection became an exodus.

“A major, original, and important contribution to scholarship and a groundbreaking and important contribution to our understanding of the evolution of Canadian identity.” David Seljak, University of Waterloo

Au risque de la conversion: L’expérience québécoise de la mission au XXe siècle (1945–1980)
By Catherine Foisy

In this ambitious and pioneering work, Catherine Foisy puts the experiences of Quebec missionaries into perspective, describing the ways in which they interweave with the socio-ecclesiastical transformations peculiar to Quebec and with those of Catholicism in mission countries.

Forthcoming January 2018

Everyday Sacred: Religion in Contemporary Quebec
Edited by Hillary Kaell

The first English-language volume on religion in contemporary Quebec.

“Gathering together an impressive range of traditions and methodologies, Everyday Sacred offers a compelling portrait of contemporary religious diversity in Quebec. The authors take topics that often suffer from stereotypical reduction (or denigration) and provide richly detailed ethnographic analysis of how and why religion matters in the lives of Québécois.” Pamela Klassen, University of Toronto

Boundless Dominion: Providence, Politics, and the Early Canadian Presbyterian Worldview
By Denis McKim

A study of the ideas – especially regarding providence, politics, nature, and history – that influenced the early Canadian Presbyterian worldview.

“By looking at the intellectual ideas of the colonial Presbyterianism tradition, Boundless Dominion breaks out of a strictly denominational framework and asks much more interesting questions. This very stimulating book makes a significant contribution to the field.” Robynne Rogers Healey, Trinity Western University

Into Silence and Servitude: How American Girls Became Nuns, 1945-1965
By Brian Titley

A critical examination of the recruitment and formation of American Catholic nuns during the final decades of convent expansion.

“Brian Titley’s comprehensive use of historical records from several religious institutes and individual memoirs significantly extends the existing body of knowledge. Into Silence and Servitude is likely to become a standard reference on mid-century religious life in the United States.” Mary L. Gautier, Georgetown University
