Kamloops This Week has published Darcy Hossack's review of Baking as Biography by Diane Tye. The Christmas season has made Hossack wistful about how the season's feasts are tied to tradition, nostalgia and family.
"Baking as Biography, A life Story in Recipes (McGill-Queen’s University Press) is Diane Tye’s new academic memoir, a book that has me thinking about the people in my life, living and departed, who’ve left indelible impressions by sharing memories of food.
Tye writes:
“After my mother died, my father experienced the passing of time differently.
“Seasons were not distinctively marked as they had been when my mother’s food preparations signalled the passing year . . .
“Late fall and winter did not bring baking and other preparations for Christmas.”
This is the reason I collect family recipes — to carry memories forward and insulate, if a very little, against too much change."
