In William Blake in the Desolate Market, G.E. Bentley Jr. looks at how Blake laboured to support himself as a poet, painter, and engraver. The author details the artist’s various occupations as commercial engraver, print-seller, teacher, copperplate printer, painter, publisher, and vendor of his own books.
Though he made hundreds of folio designs and scores of engravings, Blake was rarely paid more than twenty pounds for two or three years’ work.
The changing prices of Blake’s works, his costs and receipts, as well as his patrons and employers are expertly gathered and displayed in William Blake in the Desolate Market to show the material side of the artistic career in Britain’s Romantic period.
