Hockey has long been a popular pastime and a national obsession in Quebec, revealing much about Quebec and its relationship with the rest of Canada. In this book talk, Canadian sport historian Andrew Holman examines how deeply this sport, born in Montreal in 1875, has been embedded in and shaped by the politics of identity and national affirmation in Quebec.
In The Same but Different: Hockey in Quebec, writers from inside and outside Quebec assess the game’s history and culture in the province from the nineteenth century to the present.
Andrew Holman is a history professor and director of the Canadian Studies Program at the Bridgewater State University.
