Paolo Dardanelli, author of Restructuring the European State: European Integration and State Reform, will join panel discussion at Chatham House in London, UK.
Over the last half century, constitutional reforms aimed at devolving powers from central government have transformed the politics of a number of EU member states such as the UK, Spain, Belgium and Italy. At the same time, European constitutional reform has seen these countries transfer power upwards from national executives, legislatures and judiciaries to the structures and institutions of the EU.
This event will explore the consequences and connections between further European integration and devolution at a national level. The panel will analyse the ways in which self-determination movements have, in their campaigns for further autonomy and independence, been fuelled by an increase in devolved powers, while making positive use of the rhetoric of the EU’s stated aim of ‘ever closer union’. The panellists will seek to answer what these trends could mean for the future of both the European Union and its constituent nation states.
