Mark V. Campbell and Charity Marsh, co-editors of We Still Here: Hip Hop North of the 49th Parallel, host the first conversation in a series presented by Carleton Music as part of the Helmut Kallmann Chair Events 2020-21.
In light of the Black Lives Matter movement, musicians and music scholars across Canada are confronting systemic racism both in music and in society. What are the realities of racism in music that we need to acknowledge and reckon with? What is music’s potential for promoting anti-racism? And how is the current national conversation on racism entwined with the work of decolonization? This series consists of three conversations with musicians and music scholars who are at the forefront of anti-racist music scholarship, facilitated by Helmut Kallmann Chair, Ellen Waterman. Everyone attending will have the opportunity to join in the conversation.
We Still Here maps the edges of hip-hop culture and makes sense of the rich and diverse ways people create and engage with hip-hop music within Canadian borders. Contributors to the collection explore the power of institutions, mainstream hegemonies, and the processes of historical formation in the evolution of hip-hop culture. Throughout, the volume foregrounds the generative issues of gender, identity, and power, in particular in relation to the Black diaspora and Indigenous cultures. The contributions of artists in the scene are front and centre in this collection, exposing the distinct inner mechanics of Canadian hip hop from a variety of perspectives.
