Congratulations to our authors, Robert Mellin and Richard W. Pound, on their recent appointments to the Order of Canada.
Robert Mellin, an associate professor in Architecture at McGill University, was named a Member of the Order, “notably for his contributions to preserving Newfoundland’s architectural heritage and for his publications that have made modern architecture more accessible to a wider audience”.
Mellin’s 2011 book, Newfoundland Modern, looks at the adoption of modern architecture in Newfoundland and Premier Joseph Smallwood’s influence on the province’s cultural landscape between 1949 and 1972. He also looks at the work of two innovative local architects, Frederick A. Colbourne and Angus J. Campbell.

McGill University Chancellor Emeritus Dick Pound was promoted to Companion, the highest rank in the Order of Canada, “for his contributions as a champion of fairness in sport and of the Olympic spirit, as well as for his engagement in civic, legal and educational causes.”
Pound is the author of several MQUP titles, including his most recent, Quotations for the Fast Lane, an indispensable reference for finding the right thing to say at the right time. Book info >
