Andrew Horrall's Bringing Art to Life: a Biography of Alan Jarvis, has won the Ottawa Book Award for English Non-Fiction.
"Andrew Horrall has vividly brought to life a man who, regarded in his youth as a brilliant Adonis, played an important role in Canada’s cultural history as Director of the National Gallery of Canada, and yet is largely forgotten today in part because of his own flaws. Thanks to extensive research and interviews, the author explores Alan Jarvis’s experiences in Canada and England, setting the social and political context while sharing insights into the personality of this tragic figure. In this elegant biography, Horrall writes with impressive assurance about Jarvis’s own complexities and the brutal fall-out when art and politics clash." – Jury Statement
