McGill-Queen’s University Press is sad to acknowledge the passing of one of our authors, Dr. Sandra Alfoldy.
Sandra was a trailblazer, holding the first university position in Canada devoted to the study of craft, and expanding the boundaries of arts research. These efforts resulted in MQUP’s first book with her, Crafting Identity: The Development of Professional Fine Craft in Canada. Her second MQUP publication, The Allied Arts: Architecture and Craft in Postwar Canada, remains a groundbreaking exploration of the collaborations and tensions between architecture and craft.
Like many of the authors we are privileged to publish, she was not only a committed scholar but someone whose enthusiasm for her work was vivid and infectious and marked many colleagues, collaborators, and students—both at NSCAD and further afield.
A celebration of Sandra’s life will be held 24 March 2019 from 2:00PM–7:45PM (doors open at 1:30 PM) in the Nova Scotia Ballroom, Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel (1919 Upper Water St, Halifax, NS), followed by a reception. Donations can be made to the Dr. Sandra Alfoldy Memorial Scholarship; the Canadian Cancer Society; or to the charity of your choice. Online condolences can be made by visiting tkbarnardfuneralhome.ca (Sackville, NS) and gfoliverfi.rneralchapel.com (Creston, BC).
