Sean Mills’ From the Empire Within and Frank Mackey’s Done with Slavery have made it to the Quebec Writers' Federation Literary Awards' short list.
The Empire Within, a study of political activism in Sixties Montreal, is shortlisted for the First Book Prize. In The Empire Within, Mills tackles the paradoxes created by the surprising power and influence of Third World decolonization on political activism in 1960s Montreal.
Done with Slavery, a review of the black experience in Montreal, is up for the Mavis Gallant Prize for Non-Fiction. Mackey's book studies the aspects of the transition from slavery to freedom of black Montrealers between the British Conquest and the union of Lower and Upper Canada.
Sean Mills holds a PhD in history from Queen's University and as of January 2011, will begin a position as Assistant Professor of history at the University of Toronto.
Frank Mackey is a former Montreal Gazette writer and editor and is also the author of Steamboat Connections: Montreal to Upper Canada, 1816-1843, and Black Then: Blacks and Montreal, 1780s-1880s.
