On 18 February 2018, Martin Fourcade of France and Simon Schempp of Germany finished the 15km mass start Olympic biathlon in a time of 35:47.3 (35 mins, 47.3 secs). Both athletes received the same time, calculated to a tenth of a second, but Fourcade was awarded the gold medal and Schempp the silver. Placing was awarded based on a photo-finish image that showed Fourcade crossing ahead of Schempp.
